Third-Party Funds Again at Record High

In 2013, TU Berlin scientists attracted a total of 174 million euros in third-party funds. This is an increase on the sum for 2012 (up by 9.5 per cent from 159.6 million euros) and, in a five-year comparison, for 2008 (up by 76.2 per cent from 98.7 million euros).

Faculty IV, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, received the highest amount in third-party funds (39.4 million euros) among the TU faculties. The largest increase (up by 15 per cent to 17.8 million euros) was recorded by Faculty III, Process Sciences. Once again, third-party funds from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) rose in total by 10 per cent to 56.3 million euros in 2013. Professor Dr Christian Thomsen, President of TU Berlin, explains: "The basic resources that we as a public university receive from the Federal State of Berlin amount to about 287 million euros. Building on this basis, we raise considerably more than half of that amount in extra funds." In terms of its ability to attract third-party funds, TU Berlin has for years been among the top-ten German universities without medical schools.
