Berlin Launches Big Data Center

Existing technologies are no longer able to cope with the immense amount of data and the high rate at which data is generated or analysed.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is, therefore, repositioning the research on big data and IT security in Germany. For this purpose two Competence Centers are being established this year. One of them is the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC), which has received around 10 million euros in funding and operates under the overall control of TU Berlin. Professor Volker Markl, Chair of Database Systems and Information Management Group, is the consortium's spokesman. Other TU Berlin groups and non-university institutions are involved as well.
The BBDC has made it its objective to develop highly innovative technologies that are able to organise large amounts of data and derive well-founded decisions from them. This is achieved by merging the two fields of Data Management and Machine Learning. The focus lies on three exemplary application areas relevant in terms of economy, science and society: materials research, medicine and marketplaces for information.
